Points From History
Ariel's father Triton is actually a greek god. Triton was the son of Poseidon and he was a messenger. Triton is a merman in the myth who carries a conch and trident. Triton was a powerful person, who was said to be able to move land and calm the waves.
The evil witch used Ariel's voice to create a spell to make Eric seem like he was in love. I feel like this could be a call back to the fact Mermaids are sometimes mistakened as sirens. Sirens who sang, causing people to become in a trance and die.
